Pavilion

Hi this is my first post and I reckon I’m posting in the right place but apologies if not. This is a first year architektura project for the Uni of Bath, attached is the brief which is ridiculously long but has site details and also my sketchup model and a render off indigo. Essentially it’s a pavillion on a 7.4 by 3.4m site with great views to the South and West (render is view from N side) at a stately dom (Roche court). I’ll see if I can find a few photos of the site just to put things in perspective a bit more.
I apologise for the lack of detail in the model and render but there is only 4(ish) weeks left of the project and what is not displayed in the model/render is described below.
The render is a view from house side, right cube is glass, light enters between roofs into the central entrance/hallway, left cube is open, entrance hallway has doors at end to enter both cubes. right glass cube has Hopkins house style blinds on cross braced faces. It also cantilevers out completely on a stainless steel H section. Any criticisms of the design would be helpful. eg. ramp access and I’m unsure of the roof (form and drainage) at the moment, also the massive cantilever could be structurally worrying although presumably mulltiple H sections would run under the floor and be anchored very far into the concrete ground. Also noted is that as no plantlife would grow under the right cube the entire site would have a solid concrete floor put down.
Also the walls of the entrance hallway are translucent polycarbonate so that shadows from the crossbraces/blinds will project onto the inside of the hallway, this is slightly detrimental to the design as the already glass cube would be freezing cold in winter and ridiculously hot in summer. In terms of condensation the roof in its current form could easily be ventilated at no cost to the form of the design. As a first year student we don’t strictly have to consider how to rectify this but if anyone knows how this could be fixed it would be really helpful.
My proposal was generated from Louis Kahn’s cubes to start off with and then Mies van der Rohe’s cantilevered edges. Hopkins house also was an inspiration with the cross braces that aren’t strictly neccessary but very sexy. Also in order to create a consistency between the cubes the H section that one cantilevers out on is repeated in the roof of the other. The cross braces also form a single cube if joined together. If anyone can link any similar buildings that would be great just to throw them in at the start of my brochure.
Thanks a lot - Patrick McEvoy

Eden TV, a new UK-based natural history TV channel has recently begun broadcasting. To celebrate their launch, the network built a 16-foot-high sculpture of a mother polar bear and her cub stranded on an iceberg. Also meant to increase awareness about the plight of the polar bear and their dwindling habitat as a result of climate change, the sculpture was sent to float down the Thames river. The event took place on January 26th and started at Greenwich, South East London traveling to the Wieza Bridge and then to the House of Parliament.

Here at Inhabitat, we have a soft spot for all things green. But we have to make an exception for this rather colorful “Christmas tree” that took center stage on the ground floor reception at communications agency, AMV BBDO throughout the month of December. The rescued dead tree was given new life with the help of graphic designer Alex Ostrowski and illustrator and set maker Hattie Newman who thought to embellish the branches with colorful paper leaves.
