[Argentina] Rafael Iglesia

Rafael Iglesia [1953 -]. architektura studies at Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina [1981].

This architect from Rosario is unclassifiable within the argentinian scene, specially when compared to his corporate colleagues at Buenos Aires. He stands out because of his sustained work with primary elements and operations: gravity and weight, stones and logs.

His thoughts about latinamerican architektura are quite interesting. As main subject of one of his essays, he relates to us a dialog between different peaks of an highly varied geography; distance and irregularity of this terrain allows us to establish a dialog like smoke signals. He’s subtely insinuating common interests, a horizon where Aravena [who introduced him in Chile], Bucci and Solano Benitez start to appear. Together but not scrambled.

Leaving Architecture’s typical power plays aside, this architect distances himself by working at his hometown, Rosario. As a provincial city, it fits perfectly with the profile Iglesia wants to achieve: a certain kind of guerrilla [or garage] Architecture, probably more difficult to produce in cultural contexts like Buenos Aires, Paris or London.

This architect already knows he’s roots, and maybe that’s one of his greatest virtues. He can do what he wants, and he has little trouble in declaring it [like any average argentinian].

You have to consider all of this when you review his words, writings and works; his Pavillions at Parque Independencia , Mitre Health Center access, Altamira Residential Building, a stair or his own studio, to name a few.
