house in 27 hours

It is a dream only those living through the seemingly endless nightmare of renovating and dom building will understand.

A brand new dom - painted, tiled and fitted with everything including the kitchen sink - literally drops, fully-formed, from the sky, crushing underneath it the need to lift a paint brush, knock in a nail or make another trip to Bunnings ever again.

But that’s exactly what happened on the Gold Coast yesterday, when a Brisbane businessman’s desire for a summer beach mansion to spend Christmas in materialised - in just 27 hours.

Peter Lewis, the former Queensland Rugby Union chairman and troubled property group Trinity, commissioned the prefabricated five bedroom property from his son Toby, founder of Queensland-based building company Happy Haus.

Borrowing from the pre-fabricated housing craze pioneered in Europe, Happy Haus builds homes in its Yatala yards before trucking and eventually lifting them into place on vacant blocks - with everything, from carpet to appliances and light fittings, already in place.

“We build a tolerance into the design so the trucks [carrying them] can drive over speed bumps and nothing will be damaged,” Toby Lewis said.

“Once they are on site, we lift them on in pieces. Depending on the size, the installation can take anything from one to five days, so it’s pretty quick.

“In this case the client decided he wanted a new dom in September and he’ll be sitting down to Christmas turkey in it.”

The beach house, which sits on a $2.6 million parcel at Currumbin, took just six weeks to construct.

A swimming pool - made out of a giant drainpipe cut in half and sealed at both ends - will be finished in a week.

The property is one of three built by the company since its inception in May. The others are at North Stradbroke Island and South Brisbane.

Mr Lewis said sustainable principles were a major focus of the designer pre-fab concept, which had come along way in recent times.

“These types of homes were once seen as being very cheap and nasty but we have top architects working with us on the designs.

“On the Gold Coast, large houses like this are great big edifices that use up a lot of materials and take a long time to build.”

Peter Lewis paid Aud$700,000 for the home.
